Dear Parents,
This week we began our introduction to the alphabet, and the children did well! They were busy with the recognition and sound of the letter, "Ff." They colored a fish and worked on a firefighter, as well as a fire truck. In addition, they played with fire trucks and food. The children also made firefighter hats for the letter "Ff" sound. To reinforce this, they then traced the letter “Ff,” making a firefighter. They will be working on an alphabet book throughout the school year. The children have also started their letter books. We have and will continue to learn Halloween songs. The children really enjoy singing, and are enjoying learning the Halloween songs. For Fire Safety week, we have been talking about and practicing fire safety. For example, if your clothes catch on fire, you STOP, DROP & ROLL. We also practiced how to line up and walk out of the classroom quietly for a fire drill. There is no school on Monday, October 14th due to teacher professional development. Next week we will be on the letter "Bb." Please have your child bring in a small item with the "Bb" sound, as in bear, bird, bunny or bus. Also, please return completed homework on Tuesday. Sheets and towels went home on Thursday, please return them on Tuesday, ready for rest time. The Jog a Thon is on Friday, please have your child wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Also, please send your child with a water bottle, if you send your child with bottled water, please put your child’s name on the bottle. Upcoming events: Our Trunk or Treat will take place on Thursday, October 31st. The Harvest Festival is on Sunday, November 17th. There will be more information coming soon. This week we were busy with the diamond shape. We finished our colorful fruit theme, and it now decorates the classroom. I sent home the shape and color book your child has been working on for the past six weeks. If your child has mastered the shape and color, it will be filled in. If your child has not yet mastered the shape and color, it was left blank. Please continue reviewing and working with your child, on these skills. The class has also been learning about the five senses, and has been working on a book about their five senses. If your child was able to tell me the correct answer for each sense, the blank space is filled in, meaning that your child has mastered this task. On Friday, the school had the blessing of the animals, the children were excited to see all the animals. We also spoke about how God created everything on Earth, and how He gave us animals to make us happy. We also talked about how important it is to be kind to them. Jog-a-Thon Forms went home earlier this week. Your pledges were due Friday. Next week we will began with the letters and sounds. The first letter we will work on is the letter "Ff," as in fish, frog, fox or flower. Please have your child bring in a small item with this sound. We will also begin our printing books. In addition, I have attached a homework printing sheet to this letter. You can help your child complete the worksheet. Please turn this in on Monday. This week the children colored the orange oval shapes to add to their shape book. They also tore up construction paper, and made an orange pumpkin to emphasize the color orange. In addition to this, we worked on the sense of smell. We smelled perfume, pepper, coffee, cinnamon, baby powder, and garlic power. Next week we will cover our last color and shape. We will be working on the color purple and the diamond shape. Please have your child bring in a small purple item for the language chain. We will also be reviewing the five senses that God gave us. We will be have a family mass on Sunday, the 29th at 9:00am. Please join us as a school family. Sheets and towels went home on Thursday. Please return them on Monday ready for rest time. This week the children worked on coloring green rectangles. We also talked about the sense of taste. We tasted lemons for sour, candy for sweet, pickles for bitter, and pretzels for salty. The expressions on their faces were priceless, especially with the sour lemons. The children have been learning a new song for the color green, it's called "Five Green Speckled Frogs," we sing it along with a felt board that coincides with the song. Thank you for your support for Mrs. Holcomb, please keep her in your prayers. Next week we will be on the color orange and the oval shape, please have your child bring in a small orange item for the language chain. We will also be on the sense of smell. This week the children cut yellow triangles for their shape book. We also talked about the sense of touch, and the children had the opportunity to play with play-dough and moon sand, this helped them feel the soft and squishy textures. The children painted plates yellow to make suns, and then added faces. In addition, the outside of the plates are cut into triangles, to tie into the triangle shape. I was able to bring out the water table this week, and the preschool was able to partake in fun activities, such as fishing. They spent their morning play time catching whales, sharks, goldfish, and even some blowfish. They really enjoyed this activity! Next week we will be on the rectangle shape. We will also be on the color green. Please have your child bring in something green. In addition to this, we will talk about the sense of taste. This week the children were busy with the color blue and the square shape. The children cut out blue squares for their shape book. We have also added blueberries for our fruit themed colors. In addition, we colored big ears, then attached them to a headband and talked about things we could hear with our ears. We then listened to different sounds with our eyes closed, to try and guess if we could guess what the different sounds were just by listening. Many of the activities we do are listening activities; this is done through songs, books, tapes, and CDs. Children learn by repetition, and they already have certain books and songs that they ask for daily. Next week we will be on the color yellow, the shape will be triangle, and we will go over the sense of touch. Homework is attached to the hard copy of the Friday letter. Also, please have your child bring in something yellow on Monday. Sheets and towels went home on Thursday, please return them on Monday so they will be ready for rest time. I would also like to thank you for filling out the many forms that were sent home yesterday. All the forms were turned in, and the class was awarded ice cream. This week the children made strawberries out of red construction paper, to tie in with the color red. They colored red apples and red circles. In addition, the children cut red circles for their shape book. We also talked about the things we are able to see with the eyes God gave us. We have also been singing, which the children really seem to be enjoying. I would like to remind you that next week is a short week and there will be no school on Monday, September 2nd in honor of Labor Day. Next week we will be learning about the color blue and the square shape. Please have your child bring in something blue for the language chain. We will also be learning about the sense of hearing. Homework is attached to the Friday letter. Please have your child color the blueberries for the color of the week. I would like to thank those of you who ordered Scholastic book orders. Welcome to the new school year. I am looking forward to all the new and exciting things your child will be learning and experiencing. The children are adjusting to their new surroundings, friends and teachers very well. Next week will start our first full week of school. If you have chosen the hot lunch program for your child, make sure you have registered online and have completed the information required. If you are sending lunch with your child, please make sure to send a healthy lunch. Additionally, you will need to send a healthy snack. Scholastic book orders are going home today, this is an inexpensive way to purchase books, and build your child’s library. They are due Friday, September 10th. If you order online, the code is N2W6Q. If you have not returned your state form, please do so as soon as possible. The completed forms for each child’s file are a state requirement. Please return them to me, those forms are part of our classroom files. The form that was sent home on Thursday is for permission to send you pictures that I will be taking throughout the year. For our first week, we will be learning the color red, the circle shape, and the sense of sight. Please have your child bring in a small red item for the language chain. Remember this is part of the curriculum, and your child needs to participate. Homework is attached to a hard copy of this letter and will go home today. There will also be a Spanish translation, as the children will be introduced to Spanish as part of our curriculum this year. We will begin nap time beginning on Monday, please remind your child that they will be resting for a short time, and that they do not need to sleep, but do have to rest quietly on their cots. Hello, and welcome to your child's first year of school! This is a very exciting time in your child’s life, both socially and academically, and I would like to thank you for entrusting me with this incredible privilege. This year your child will be exposed to many engaging learning opportunities! We will learn about letters, shapes, colors, and numbers though a variety of activities. We will explore many of these things through music and art in the classroom. During the first week of school, there will be no rest time, this will make the transition easier for your child.
